The Magicians has entered its fifth and final season on SYFY. The network announced the end of the show much to the disappointment of fans everywhere.
The Magicians is currently SYFY’s longest-running scripted series, but all good things must come to an end. Fans are looking for answers as to why their favorite show was abruptly canceled.
Producers Sera Gamble and John McNamara have taken quick action, talking to TV Insider about the news. Click here to read the full interview but see below for a few snippets on what they had to say.
John McNamara states:
“It played out kind of the way it’s played out almost every season. With the exception of Season 4 into Season 5, we never knew whether or not we’re going to get picked up. It was always a discussion—never really about the creative—about the financials and you always know, with any show, that there’s this kind of fine line between what it brings in and what it costs.”
Like most shows, it all comes down to the numbers. Although The Magicians has a loyal set of followers, it was never enough to make the show a cash-generating machine. Ratings and merchandising are the name of the game.
SYFY chimed in with their two cents on the matter:
“The Magicians has been a part of our Syfy family for five fantastic seasons. As we near the end of this journey, we want to thank [executive producers] John McNamara, Sera Gamble, Henry Alonso Myers, Lev Grossman, and our entire brilliant cast, crew, writers, and directors for their beautiful creation. But most of all, we thank the fans for their tremendous support and passion. Because of you, magic will be in our hearts forever.”
The Magicians ends its 5 seasons run on April 1st. If you’re new to the series, the show is currently available on Netflix.
