Do you hear that music, everybody? That rising theme that gets the blood pumping and the memories firing on all cylinders? Prepare to time-travel back to Saturday morning because we are getting a heavy dose of nostalgia this spring. Marvel Studios has released the trailer for X-Men ’97, which transports us back into the ’90s with its returning cast and modernized theme song (seen below).

The series will debut on Disney Plus on March 20. The X-Men ’97 trailer starts by showing the final scene with Professor X before he dies in the original run of the series. The theme kicks in, and we get a new Marvel Animation logo before seeing what the modernized animation looks like and where the characters go from losing their leader. We see a Magneto (Matthew Waterson) in power and raising Sentinels to deal with mutants and a pregnant Jean (Jennifer Hale).

Some of the actors have died since the original ending. The returning and new cast members include Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, JP Karliak as Morph, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, AJ LoCascio as Gambit, Holly Chou as Jubilee, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, Matthew Waterson as Magneto and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler.

The revived animated series may not be canon for the MCU, but it will hold fans over until they get a proper mutant taste. The idea has been sprinkled throughout recently with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Ms. Marvel. Deadpool & Wolverine will give us our first proper X-Men introduction into the MCU, although we are uncertain how that plays into the overall universe due to the multiverse angle.

The original series ran from 1992 to 1997. The continuation comes from head writer Beau DeMayo and directors Jake Castorena, Chase Conley, and Emi Yonemura. The nostalgic music comes from The Newton Brothers.

The X-Men ’97 trailer comes not long before the series kicks off on Disney Plus on March 20. The animated series will run for ten episodes.
