Battlefield is one of the most prominent shooters in the genre, and although not as regular as Call of Duty’s yearly releases, it has a somewhat predictable release cycle. But that may not be the case for a while. According to EA, if you were expecting to see a new Battlefield game sometime in the near future, don’t hold your breath. EA has announced that there will not be a new entry in the franchise until the end of the company’s 2025 fiscal year, which starts from April 1 2024 to March 31, 2025.
What makes this odd is that we’ve been seeing Battlefield games come out fairly regularly in the past. The most recent entries came out a year or two apart from the last one. But since a Battlefield game hasn’t even been announced yet, a release is further out than the norm.
The CFO of EA, Stuart Canfield, said during an earnings call that looking beyond 2025, the company plans on expanding its core IP and famous franchises. Which includes “iconic releases” like Battlefield, The Sims, and other titles that have not been revealed yet.
Canfield reiterated that there will not be a new Battlefield game until well into 2025, and that is assuming that the game in question is revealed in 2024. He said:
“And we’ve called out also that Battlefield is not in our [fiscal year] 2025 outlook,”
What We Know About The New Battlefield Game Coming Out In 2025?
The last game in the franchise was Battlefield 2042, which bombed hard at launch but has since garnered a player base like previous entries. According to Canfield, there is more than enough content planned for Battlefield 2042 Season 6: Dark Creations which came out in October 2023.
Back when Battlefield 2042 came out, EA floated the idea of creating a connected Battlefield Universe, but probably not like the Avengers. Vince Zampella, the co-founder of Respawn, was put at the helm of overseeing the future of the franchise.
As for what the next Battlefield will look like, according to EA CEO Andrew Wilson, the next entry in the series will be a reimagination of what we’ve seen before. Furthermore, the developer of the Burnout series and Need For Speed Hot Pursuit, Criterion Games, will be working on Battlefield as well.
