Politics get messy in this upcoming drama. Max has released the first trailer for The Regime, which follows Kate Winslet as a European leader and her close relationship with her bodyguard, played by Matthias Schoenaerts (seen below). The six-episode limited series, formerly named The Palace, comes from Succession writer and executive producer Will Tracy.
The series follows the chancellor over the course of a year of her in power. She uses her guard for more than the usual job requirements for his position. He becomes a right-hand man to help maintain power and even keep anyone at an arm’s distance away from her, including friends and family. The footage shows the evolution of this relationship while giving a sense of the drama and comedy that will happen. The two leads will be joined by Guillaume Gallienne, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and Hugh Grant.

Tracy comes in as the showrunner, writer, and executive producer. He will have quite the reunion in the writer’s room with The Menu co-writer Seth Reiss and author and Succession consultant Gary Shteyngart. They are joined by Bodies Bodies Bodies writer Sarah DeLappe and Stephen Colbert writer Jen Spyra.
Kate Winslet leading The Regime marks a return to the streaming service. She was in the crime drama Mare of Easttown in 2021 that followed her as a troubled detective investigating a murder in her small town. The limited series caught 16 nominations at the Emmys and ended up winning four awards. The series won trophies for acting categories for the Avatar star, Evan Peters, and Julianne Nicholson. It also won for its production design.
The Regime is one of several projects in the works for Kate Winslet. She will star in the animated film Naya Legend of the Golden Dolphin and the drama Fake! from The Bourne Ultimatum writer Scott Z. Burns.
The Regime will premiere on Max on March 3.
