Another popular 90’s product makes a comeback with the Sega Genesis Mini. Sega has released a mini version of one of its most popular consoles the Sega Genesis. The Mini is a bite-sized version of the original console with 42 built-in games. The Mini doesn’t function as a Sega Genesis it can only play the 42 games built-in.
Genesis Does what…Nintendo already did?
The Sega Genesis Mini is the latest retro mini console with built-in games. The mini consoles were popularized by Nintendo with releases of the NES and SNES classics. These classic consoles are a way for older gamers to relive and experience some of their favorite memories once again. It’s also a way of new gamers to experience the older generation of games they might’ve missed. However, this is Sega’s second mini Genesis released. Sega Genesis Flashback was another Genesis mini console made by At Games. The first console was plagued with emulation issues and poorly received. Therefore, Sega had to right their wrongs with the Mini.
But Some Things Nintendont
What stands out about the Mini is the inclusion of 42 games. The NES classic had 30, and the SNES classic only had 20. These include a variety of some of the Genesis’s best titles including, Sonic The Hedgehog, Ecco the Dolphin, and Virtua Fighter 2. The console also includes Sega’s version of Tetris which wasn’t released for the Genesis. The mini console also has some neat bonuses which let play different region versions of games by changing the language options.
The Sega Genesis Mini does have one major drawback. The console comes bundled with two USB controllers. However, the controllers that come with the console are the three buttoned controllers. Sega should’ve included the much superior six buttoned controllers, to make the fighting games more playable.
Above all the Sega Genesis Mini is a great mini console, with great games and features to match. The Mini costs, $79.99 US and $99.96 CAD. Therefore, it’s a great value for the price.
