The women of The View are coming to Michelle Obama‘s defense after she revealed why she skipped President Donald Trump‘s inauguration. On Wednesday’s episode of her podcast, the former first lady confessed that being a no-show at the swearing-in ceremony was the “right for me.” However, the talk show hosts wonder why Michelle even had to defend her choice in the first place.
Whoopi Goldberg led the discussion during Thursday’s airing, asking, “Why does she owe anybody an explanation?” Although her co-host, Joy Behar, explained that Mrs Obama’s absence sparked divorce rumors, Goldberg still didn’t think it was necessary for her to defend her decision.
“This is the fourth time she has had to do this. And I don’t understand why. Why do I have to know?” the Sister Act star pondered. “Why do I have to ask you, ‘Oh, did you get your friend this month?’ Why is it my business?” Behar then interjected, making a joke of Goldberg’s period comment.
“If I had to listen to Trump babble on for two hours, I’d have menstrual cramps too,” she playfully mocked.
The witty comeback earned roars of laughter from the audience and her co-hosts. Panelist Sunny Hostin then reiterated Michelle’s explanation about women practicing the art of saying no. Alyssa Farrah Griffin agreed, saying the former first lady’s decision to say no to the inauguration caused people to jump to the “worst conclusion.”
The View Ladies Raise Questions About Melania Trump vs. Michelle Obama?
While still on the topic, Goldberg wondered why Michelle Obama — a former first lady, faces more scrutiny than the current first lady, Melania Trump.
“Because I noticed, and maybe I’m just making stuff up. But I noticed that when Melania doesn’t go anywhere, people don’t flip out the way they have been flipping out?” she wondered. The audience seemed to agree as they responded with applause. However, Hostin disagreed, saying that it is not always the case.
Goldberg, however, remained adamant, saying Melania isn’t “obligated” to explain why she is absent from official events. Co-host Sarah Hines then argued that the same rules shouldn’t apply to Michelle and Mrs. Trump.
“When you’re the acting first lady, I think the obligations are different, and should be,” Hines maintained. “But when you are out of office, you are out of office. She is allowed to say, peace,” the journalist remarked while making the peace sign.
Concluding the segment, the women of The View applauded Michelle for living on her own terms, even though the world might not understand it.
