Two months after Viola Davis and crew came in armed with swords and spears to fight, The Woman King has set a digital release for November 22. On the physical side, the DVD and Blu-ray release will hit on December 13.
The digital release of The Woman King will deliver plenty of insight into the behind-the-scenes making of the historical action movie. It will offer over an hour of content, containing interviews, the training for the intense battles, and a deeper look at the detailed sets.
The Woman King sets release dates for digital and physical editions
The film looks at the Kingdom of Dahomey, a tribe in Africa between the 18th and 19th centuries. The story focuses on its women warriors and follows them in a battle against a rival tribe who were key players in the slave trade. Davis led with co-stars Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel), John Boyega, Thuso Mbedu (The Underground Railroad), and Sheila Atim (The Underground Railroad). It was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Old Guard) and written by Dana Stevens (Fatherhood).
The Woman King digital release is coming in, as the film had a big opening weekend of about $19 million. It is currently holding $83 million at the box office from its approximate $50 million budget. Much of that comes from its domestic run, as it holds $63 million and the rest of the $20 million goes internationally. Between a strong lead with Davis, word of mouth, and strong reviews, the film found a strong start. It scored 94% on Rotten Tomatoes from 224 critic reviews and 99% from over 5,000 audience reviews.
Mario Bello, Dale Butler, Davis, Cathy Schulman, and Julius Tennon produced the film. Peter McAleese served as executive producer.
The Woman King is going to digital platforms and physical between November and December. You can still catch the film in theaters to see the historical epic on the big screen.
