A Texas woman is warning Walmart shoppers to pay closer attention to their totals after she says a mysterious charge appeared while she was using self-checkout, sending her total much higher than she expected. She claimed in a now-viral TikTok video that the charge may be part of a scam operated by the retail giant.
Several netizens reacting to her post appeared to share similar suspicions, though some commenters claiming to be Walmart employees offered a different explanation for what could have happened.
The woman, who goes by @sabercierraa on TikTok, said she had seen other people warn shoppers about unexpected charges before, but never thought she would experience something similar herself. She explained that she was using self-checkout when she noticed an item on the screen labeled simply as “site merch.”
According to her, she had only picked up 10 items, yet somehow there were now 11 showing on the screen, with the extra item carrying a charge of more than $20. “They doubled my price with a random site merch charge,” the woman said.
She recalled immediately calling over a Walmart associate for help when she realized what was on her screen. She claimed that the employee didn’t even have to walk over to the machine, but removed the “site merch” item remotely using a handheld device.
The woman said that while the issue was resolved, she remained suspicious after that Walmart trip. “Why is it on there?” she asked, questioning whether the charge was intentional or simply some kind of error.
Netizens React to Texas Woman’s Walmart Experience
The TikTok video gained over 600,000 views within 24 hours of being posted. The woman’s experience had some viewers reconsidering their own checkout habits.
“I don’t even ever look at the total when I pay. I will be from now on,” one person admitted. Another was already ahead of the game, writing, “I’m already adding up in my head as I’m shopping so when I get to the front that price better match the numbers in my head.”
Others echoed her suspicions. “All these companies are testing us to see how much they can get away with/scam,” one viewer claimed. Another asked, “How long have they been doing this?” A third even speculated, “It was probably that employee charging you a separate payment that pays her directly.”
One commenter, @grimbreaper13, claimed she had once received a site merch charge as well. She shared a screenshot of her list allegedly showing what appeared to be a $21.30 “site merch” charge and wrote, “they tried to do that to me.”
Someone else recalled having a different pricing problem at Walmart. “They had a 200 dollar microphone im their clearence section for 92 dollars [sic]… I rang it up just for it to be 215 dollars and even with picture proof of the tag and everything at clearance they still wouldnt let me buy it for 92 dollars,” they claimed.
Walmart Employees Offer Another Explanation
Not everyone in the comments believed the mysterious charge pointed to a scam. Several commenters who identified themselves as Walmart employees said “site merch” can appear when merchandise isn’t properly identified by the checkout system.
“Walmart employee here! site merch is majority of the time some type of clothing. its because whatever you rang up also registered as something else. its completely by accident and its not some scam,” one person explained.
Another agreed, writing, “I work at walmart. this isn’t a conspiracy; just something unnamed in the system; usually happens with clothing or newer items.”
A third person claiming to be an associate also pushed back against the idea that an employee could have secretly added the charge. “An associate can’t add an item from their work phone but they can void an item only if you click the ‘x’ to the left of the item first,” the commenter said.
Those explanations provided a possible reason for the strange wording on the screen, but the woman said there was still one part she couldn’t make sense of.
According to her, she purchased exactly 10 items, and all 10 were already accounted for on her receipt. The “site merch” charge appeared as an additional 11th item rather than simply being an unfamiliar label for something she had actually purchased.
She added that nothing else needed to be changed or removed from her purchase besides the “site merch” charge, leaving her just as confused about where it came from.
Whatever caused it, she caught the extra item before paying, and her experience gave plenty of viewers a reason to start giving that checkout screen a second look.
