This Cancun Hotel Has the Answer to How Resorts Keep the Pigeon Droppings Under Control: ‘I Would Also Keep My Distance From a Raptor on the Hunt’

Hawlucha, I choose you!

In big cities, pigeons are sometimes a big problem because these small animals in the wild transmit many diseases. Also, with so many birds, it’s hard to keep the areas clean and free of pigeon poop. Fortunately, a Reddit video shows how this hotel in Cancun has one of the most effective ways to control the pigeon population away, with the help of a hawk. None of the pigeons in this video were injured.

Redditor Osech shared on r/nextfuckinglevel a video of an employee carrying a hawk on his hand. He stealthily approaches one of the doors leading to a hotel’s outdoor, pool-like area. In this area, several pigeons walk quietly until the employee, in an agile movement, throws the hawk at the pigeons. This scene reminded me of Ash Ketchum throwing his Pokeball or sending Pikachu to start a fight. The pigeons, noticing the appearance of a predator, instantly take flight. After a few seconds of chasing, the hawk returns to its trainer, but none of the pigeons.

Yeah, pretty sure I would also keep my distance from a raptor on the hunt.

If this tactic ultimately works with all kinds of species, from small birds, small to medium mammals, and even humans, it seems. Many humans would stay away from a predatory bird, but not the man in the video.

Using hawks to scare pigeons is typical for hotels and resorts in tourist destinations such as Cancun. However, it is also common for various animals to approach the hotels. In Cancun, it is sometimes customary to see monkeys in corridors and terraces. Even some are so used to humans that they can get closer. Even so, if a wild animal is very close to you, it is best to give them their space and not bother them. You never know how an animal may react, so it is best to leave it in the hands of professionals.
