The ladies are coming back. Warner Bros. Discovery has signed a deal with Netflix to bring every season of Sex and the City to the streamer. All 94 episodes across six seasons will arrive sometime this April.
However, the deal will not be for every territory. The streamer will launch the HBO series in the U.S. and some European countries. The deal is for the original series, not the two movies or the spinoff series And Just Like That (as first reported by Variety).
Each Season of Sex and the City Comes to Netflix, Leaving Behind the Movies and Spinoff
The series focused on life in New York as a woman in the ’90s. Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw, Kim Cattrall’s Samantha Jones, Kristin Davis’ Charlotte York, and Cynthia Nixon’s Miranda Hobbes were friends who loved to gossip and relate about their struggles, including their sex lives or lack of sex lives. The steamy series was created by Darren Star as an adaptation of the same name of an anthology series by Candace Bushnell.
The streaming landscape has radically changed. For the longest time, exclusive shows were the way to get people to subscribe to your platform. Now, companies like Warner Bros. Discovery are making major shakeups to plans, including putting Sex and the City and other HBO originals on Netflix. Disney licensed a slate of shows to Netflix, including Grey’s Anatomy, This Is Us, White Collar, and Prison Break.
The bubble has burst from the initial years of streaming, replacing traditional cable TV. Now, adjustments have had to be made. We have seen how this has benefitted Netflix in the past. Last year, USA’s Suits became a phenomenon that mimicked a hit original series. It garnered enough interest to set up a sequel series that is in the works.
Get ready for Netflix to get gossipy and steamy when Sex and the City hits the platform in early April.
