Texas Rep. Brandon Gill praised Christopher Columbus while defending European settlement and Western civilization in a Columbus Day message. He called Columbus “one of the great men of world history.” The remarks drew attention because Gill rejected apologizing for the history and culture he celebrated.
In the post, Gill connected Columbus and European exploration to Christianity. He said European ancestors came to the New World “guided by faith in Christ.”
Gill described those ancestors as settling “wild lands” and building Western civilization. He then broadened his argument from Columbus to American history and culture.
“Our history and our culture are exceptional,” Gill said. He closed with a declaration that “we’re no longer apologizing for it.”
Brandon Gill Faces Backlash Over Columbus Day Remarks
Gill’s post quickly divided users over Columbus’ legacy, American history and his refusal to apologize.
One critic wrote, “This is so pathetic that you have to virtue signal like this.” Another challenged Gill’s wording directly: “Bold to say “no longer apologizing” about a holiday that started as an apology.”
Others disputed his portrayal of Columbus. One response stated, “Historical significance & moral greatness are not the same thing.” Another wrote, “I’m sure the Caribbean Arawak and native Americans would disagree with your statement.”
A separate user questioned Gill’s historical understanding: “You failed your college world history course, didn’t you.” Another response added, “I think the indigenous people would disagree.”
Supporters also defended the celebration. One user wrote, “I’m proud of our history. And I appreciate this administrations recognition and celebration of our beginnings.” Another stated, “I’m very glad to be celebrating Christoper Columbus again! History should not be rewritten or viewed through the lens of the future.”
The debate remains focused on how Columbus Day should represent American history. Gill’s post did not address the historical objections raised by critics.
