A black nurse in Ohio shared a glimpse of what he described as an average day working in med-surg, and the short video left viewers with a pretty good idea of why he says he eventually walked away from healthcare.
The nurse, who goes by @dolojxsh on TikTok, simply filmed himself standing quietly as an elderly patient could be heard repeatedly hurling racist remarks at him from somewhere off camera.
The patient repeatedly referred to him as “monkey man” and “black monkey” and used other racial slurs. “I got a monkey in the house. A black monkey,” the patient called. “Monkey do this, monkey do that. Monkeys does whatever he wants because he’s the monkey man.”
Throughout it all, the nurse never responded to the patient. He occasionally glanced toward the camera or nodded along as the remarks continued in the background, seemingly letting the moment speak for itself.
Viewers Heartbroken Over Nurse’s Treatment
The clip struck a nerve with viewers, many of whom were disturbed by the abuse the nurse appeared to endure without reacting.
“That racism runs deep,” one person commented. “Old patients be forgetting everything but the fact they racist,” someone else remarked. Another wrote, “Disgusting. Don’t care how old or young, this shows their character & heart.”
A fourth told him, “This made my heart so sad no one deserves this treatment period let alone at a job they have to be at to survive and always being the better person.” Another viewer added, “Sorry this happened to you. And hoping your leadership changed your assignment. We don’t go to work to be abused.”
Others turned the conversation toward the treatment of healthcare workers in general, especially Black healthcare workers. “Protect black people in medical professions, this should not be as normalized as it is or allowed,” one commenter urged. Another chimed in, “Medical professionals should NOT be subjected to this. This should be considered some form of abuse/assault against a medical professional.”
The clip went viral within 24 hours of being uploaded. As of this writing, it has racked up more than 2 million views and over 300,000 likes as viewers expressed outrage over what he experienced on the job.
