‘This Man Will Never Leave Office’: Texas Liberals Outraged After Governor Greg Abbott Considers Running Again in 2030

How long can he remain?

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has recently talked about the possibility of serving a fifth term in the highest office in the state, without ruling out the possibility of potentially running in 2030. His response irritated liberal-leaning Texas voters, who have not won the office since Ann Richards lost to George W. Bush in 1994.

During an interview with ABC News, Abbott did not rule out the possibility of running for a fifth term. While he said that he’s “looking at what’s ahead” of him, he also noted that he is focused on serving a fourth term and setting the record for staying 16 years in the position.

Texas does not have a limit on the number of terms a governor can serve in office, so Abbott could likely run for as long as he intended to, as long as he had enough support.

Texas Liberals React to Abbott Potentially Running in 2030

The possibility of a fifth term for Abbott did not sit well with liberal Texans on r/Texas. One of them lashed out at the Republican Party: “What good has any Republican in Texas done? 30 years of them being in charge of the state, and everything is terrible.” Someone else added, complaining: “And yet they still blame democrats, commies, and any other boogeymen for their mistakes while maintaining power.”

The idea of seeing Abbott stay in power for so long really irritated some locals. One of them said: “No thank you. With 5 terms, that would make him the longest-serving Texas governor. And at 73 years old when taking office, the oldest Texas governor as well. Let’s elect Hinojosa and make Texas, Texas again.” Others agreed: “He wants to fix the problems in Texas… that he caused. I’m voting for Gina. I’m voting for common sense.”

Others did not have much hope for the future: “This man will never leave office, considering he doesn’t do anything and still gets voted in every 4 years.”

In any case, Abbott has to win the election against Democrat Gina Hinojosa in November to remain in power. Recent polling shows Abbott ahead of Hinojosa by 5%, not such a comfortable margin to secure the election just yet.
