Given that Thor: Ragnarok is often credited with reviving the Thor movies, it’s no surprise fans are excited to see what its director, Taika Waititi, has planned for Love and Thunder.
And while not much is known about the film, other than Natalie Portman will return as a female Thor, it’s been revealed that Waititi will be working with another writer on the script.
First reported by Variety, director, actress, and writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is co-writing Love and Thunder. She is perhaps best known for the 2019 Netflix film Something Great, which she directed, write, and produced.
Robinson also created the MTV show Sweet/Vicious. Airing from November 2016 to January 2017, the comedy-drama suffered low ratings leading to its eventual cancellation after one season. However, it was praised by critics, garnering a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus is, “Fearless and fun, Sweet/Vicious shines a light on the dark corners of rape culture for a refreshingly comedic, prescient series.”
Given Robinson’s background in writing a comedic series, her input can only be valuable for Thor: Love and Thunder. Since the God of Thunder’s third solo film, comedy has been a huge part of his character and storylines. From fighting the Hulk on Sankaar to becoming fat and depressed, Thor has begun to stand out in ways previously unexpected.
In Thor: Ragnarok, Waititi wanted audiences to leave the cinema with “a sense of joy.” Any particular Thor stories didn’t inspire the film but instead took visual cues from the comics. Waititi only read Planet Hulk and God of Thunder, explaining he “wasn’t taking storyline or characters, because [his] strength is tone and character and dialogue.”
Whether any particular Marvel stories will inspire love and Thunder or if a creative license will be used once again is anybody’s guess. However, Jane’s adoption of the Thor mantle is obviously inspired by the character’s story in 2015, where she takes up Mjolnir. It wasn’t until fairly recently, in June 2019’s War of the Realms #6, that she gives up the identity. She later becomes a Valkyrie.
