The Lazarus Project is a brand-new sci-fi series that has the U.S. gripped. The show, which originally debuted in 2022 in the UK, follows George, who wakes up one day to find that his life has been backtracked a few months. All of his recent wins have been lost, including his success at work and his marriage to the love of his life. But things take an even stranger turn when he meets Archie, who recruits George for The Lazarus Project, a secret organization with the ability to turn back time whenever the world is on the brink of extinction.
The Lazarus Project Explores Time Travel with a Twist
Reliving a part of one’s life is something a lot of people would love. However, as interesting as it sounds in theory, actually experiencing it can be heartbreaking. Episode 1 of the TNT show opens with George (Paapa Essiedu) waking up next to his fiancée Sarah (Charly Clive) on July 1. George must repeat the events of the past six months, forced to watch life unfold just as it did before.
Life During Another Pandemic
On the second loop, George lives through the months leading to MERS-22, the pandemic which ends the world after COVID-19. The virus sweeps the globe, with countless people losing their lives. George and his wife get infected and are scared they will succumb to the virus. However, the time is set back to July 1 again, and they have to relive the past six months. George is the only one who notices that he has already lived through the events.
The Lazarus Project Sees George Trying to Understand His Gift
George is one of the very few people who can detect a time jump. Although he relives the events of the past six months, things do not go exactly as they did before. He tries to discover exactly what could happen by googling time loops. Sarah thinks he is crazy and suggests he sees a therapist while she stays with her family for a while and eventually moves out of their apartment. Archie (Anjli Mohindra) and George then meet. She informs him that she works for an organization that can help him understand his gift and reveal why time backtracks to the same date.
The Time Travel Storyline
The loop starts again on July 1, with George waking up beside Sarah. This time, he meets with Archie at the covert headquarters for The Lazarus Project. As mentioned, the organization’s goal is to prevent the extinction of the human race using time travel. It is revealed that the world has ended many times over the past decades.
Life in a Time Warp
Per SciFinow, the organization repeatedly turns back the clock, using July 1 as its time stamp. The MERS-22 pandemic ended the world, which is why George constantly relives a particular block of time. Archie asks George to join the operation in order to understand why he is a “mutant” and to help divert the next global crisis. He meets the crew and other mutants like himself responsible for preventing the world from ending.
