Holiday moviegoing has found an unlikely constant thanks to Timothée Chalamet. For three consecutive years, the actor has anchored December releases that audiences reliably turn into hits, cutting across genres and budgets. With another Christmas success now logged, his seasonal box office streak looks less like luck and more like strategy.
Why Timothée Chalamet Owns Christmas Screens
Per Variety, the run began with 2023’s “Wonka,” rolled through 2024’s Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown,” and now continues with the high-energy table-tennis caper “Marty Supreme.” The latest release delivered $27 million over the four-day holiday frame, reinforcing the actor’s rare ability to draw crowds on name recognition alone. Industry watchers see a clear pattern forming.
“Seemingly every year, Timothée has a major hit during the important holiday moviegoing corridor,” notes Comscore’s head of marketplace trends, Paul Dergarabedian.
“No matter the genre, whether it’s a musical, biopic, sci-fi or comedy, his choice in the material and collaborators has made him not only a bona fide movie star, but a box-office draw.”
That versatility has made Chalamet synonymous with Christmas releases, much like Will Smith once ruled the Fourth of July weekend. The difference is range, as musicals, prestige dramas, and original comedies all seem to benefit from his presence during the busiest moviegoing week of the year.
A Risk That Paid Off
“Marty Supreme” opened behind franchise heavyweights while still becoming A24’s second-largest debut to date. Directed by Josh Safdie, the $70 million film leaned on originality rather than built-in IP (intellectual property). This gamble appears to be working thanks to strong reviews and word-of-mouth.
“This was a gutsy, creative risk, a period sports drama, and it’s going to pay off, thanks to Chalamet and great holiday playing time,” says David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research.
Relentless promotion also helped the film cut through the noise, from viral stunts to old-school spectacle. As Exhibitor Relations analyst Jeff Bock put it:
“Timothée Chalamet is the ‘it guy’ right now. There’s no denying it. The promotional work he’s done with this film is high-level genius.”
With “Dune: Part III” already slated for December 2026, Chalamet’s reign over the holiday box office doesn’t appear to be ending anytime soon.
