In October 2015, Supergirl premiered on CBS and has since been picked up for a full 20 episodes. The series is centered around Kara Zor-El who is played by Melissa Benoist, as she is sent to Earth from the doomed planet of Krypton. She is initially sent with instructions to look after her baby cousin Kal-El, but when her ship gets stuck in the phantom zone time stops. By the time the ship frees itself 24 years have passed and Kal-El has now become Superman. Kara struggles to embrace her powers after hiding them for so long and decided to follow in the path of her superhero cousin, becoming Supergirl.

Supergirl in costume

Since the series premiered Superman has yet to make an appearance, with the exception of a very blurred shot. Given the shadow, Superman casts in Kara’s world it’s quite possible that we may see him pop up in Supergirl. Recently rumors have begun to swirl about Tom Welling making an appearance as the Man of Steel. Tom Welling played a young Clark Kent in the series Smallville which ran from 2001 to 2011. The finale of the show had him make the transformation to Superman though we never actually saw him in full costume. When asked for his thoughts on reprising the character in the Supergirl series, he has this to say:

“There’s people who would like it. There’s people who don’t like it, but I will tell you that no one has ever asked me to do it. So, I don’t know. It would be kind of odd. I don’t know who he is at that point.”

It currently sounds like seeing Welling reprise the role is far from a sure thing. It’s also quite possible that given the current state of the DC films and upcoming Batman Vs Superman that the character just might remain on the big screen. It was also rumored awhile back that Tom Welling would potentially play Superman again in the popular Flash TV series, but it didn’t pan out.

Tom Welling as Clark Kent/Superman

Even though it’s not likely for us to see Tom Welling as Superman in Supergirl anytime soon, it’s certainly within the realm of possibility. After all former Superman Dean Cain and former Supergirl Helen Slater have already appeared in the series as Kara’s adoptive parents. Supergirl airs Monday Nights on CBS with an hour run time.

Do you think Superman should play a role in the Supergirl series or should he stay on the big screen? If so, who do you think should play the character? Be sure to let us know in the comments below and check back for future updates.
