Despite its family-friendly appearance, there’s a surprisingly robust community of horror developers over on Roblox. In fact, we’d go as far as declaring that many titles on this list would give some of the big triple-A horror games a run for their money. So, if you’re in the mood for a scare and you’re a fan of the popular free-to-play platform, here are 10 of the scariest Roblox horror games that will give your nightmares, well, um… nightmares. Let’s do this!
10. Pinstripe Murders
Released in 2021, Pinstripe Murders was one of the first terrifying experiences on the platform that legit didn’t appear anything like a typical Roblox game. Gone were the blocky sprites of olde. Instead, we were treated to some strikingly impressive graphics that mimicked PlayStation 1 era titles.
On paper, it’s not an especially complex story: you’re investigating a murder in a lavish hotel, while a mysterious killer is on the loose. Still, there are enough twists and turns in this surreal horror adventure to keep you on the alert, especially when some of the doors whisk you away to dreamlike otherworldly dimensions that’ll make your mind melt. In short, even though it may be one of the scariest game on Roblox, it’s not as horrifyingly white-knuckle as the entries below.
9. Light Bulb
Most notably, Light Bulb is one of the early works of Zeekerss, the chap who singlehandedly developed the popular horror hit, Lethal Company. Before developing the overnight co-op sensation that went on to reach over 180,000 concurrent players on Steam, he cut his teeth on crafting creepy and atmospheric titles over on Roblox. And, yes, Light Bulb is undoubtedly both of those things in whopping great spades.
Nominated at the 4th Annual Bloxy Awards for Best Singleplayer Game of 2016, Light Bulb is essentially a twisted reimagining of hide and seek, but with an ominous storyline woven into its core. It even boasts two very different endings, with plenty of mind-bending moments to keep you on your toes.
8. Midnight Hours
What would you do if you awoke in a strange house, with a ringing phone and a hideous monster stalking you in the darkness outside? That’s the deal in Rezrift Studio’s jumpscare-ridden shocker. Thankfully, you won’t have to take on the beastie on just your lonesome, as this one can be played with up to three other players. And seriously, having a few friendos in tow will make things a lot easier — trust us!
What’s cool about Midnight Hours is the fact that you can use the in-game phone to call different numbers a ‘la Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. You can even call the cops straightaway if you’re feeling like a big ol’ chicken. Be warned, however: the boys in blue can’t arrest a demon when said demon EATS THEIR FACE OFF.
7. Specter
If you’ve ever fancied yourself as a bit of a Ghostbuster, then Specter may be just what you’ve been looking for. That’s right, team up with up to three pals and step into the shoes of a team of paranormal investigators as you try and track down ghostly entities in various haunted locations.
Inspired by Kinetic Games’ Phasmophobia, Specter is less of a jumpscare-riddled fright-fest and more of a slow-burn atmospheric chiller. Players have to use a variety of gadgets to help them find, identify and communicate with the spirits on the other side, while also keeping their own sanity in check by illuminating the darkness with a light source. While this may not have you jumping out of your skin at every turn, its eerily haunting mechanics will engross you.
6. Doors
No, we’re not talking about the famous American rock band, silly! Instead, we’re talking about the 2022 Roblox smash-hit that came out of nowhere and took the world by storm. Developed by LSplash, Doors is material evidence that you can make even the most mundane and boring object unnervingly creepy.
At its core, Doors is a first-person puzzler where players have to go through a seemingly endless series of doorways. As players progress, the game begins to throw increasingly challenging monsters at you and these serve as miniature puzzles.
For example, Screech is a wee spherical critter that emits a PSST sound effect when it’s about to attack. As a result, you’ll need to look around for Screech and stare at it, otherwise it’ll bite you on the noggin. All the monsters have their own weird method of circumventing them, and a big part of the fun is in working out how to evade them all.
5. Frigid Dusk
IDC Studio’s 2021 exploratory horror experience sees players investigating a dilapidated laboratory that’s been used to create a powerful biological weapon of war. Of course, as you’ve probably already guessed, the aforementioned monstrosity has managed to escape from its shackles. That ol’ chestnut!
As the test site is located in an isolated region near Mount Everest, the environment is fittingly cold and snowy, hence the game’s chilly vibe and moniker. Featuring three distinct chapters, with each boasting a different locale and puzzles, this is a pulse-pounding adventure that will undoubtedly get under your skin. Undoubtedly one of the scariest Roblox games out there!
4. Trespass
Who doesn’t like a trip to a peaceful forest to get away from it all, eh? Fortunately, in Virtuoso Productions’ first-person spook ’em up that’s exactly what’s in the cards. Well, sort of. Yes, while you do get to visit a forest, it’s more of a dark, dank, and terrifying place as opposed to the calm and scenic slice of nature that you were likely expecting.
After all, Trespass sees you awaken in an isolated backwoods in the middle of the night with your belongings all strewn around your campsite, and with your grandfather missing. Your task is to traverse the gloomy meadows, solve environmental puzzles, and track down your missing grandpa. Oh, and there’s some killer beasties on the loose. Why is there always a catch?
3. Apeirophobia
Inspired by The Backrooms creepypasta from 2019, Apeirophobia is an immersive Roblox horror game where players must navigate a series of seemingly empty office spaces in a bid to escape from a twisted alternate dimension brimming with bloodthirsty fiends.
While you can play the game in solo, it’s a lot easier to manage with multiple players as you can work as a team to thwart the beasties that are trying to catch you. Plus, there are five different difficulty modes to help tailor the scares and intensity to the individual. Still, even on Easy, this title has the potential to seriously kick your butt and scare you senseless. You’ve been warned!
2. The Mimic
Everyone knows that the more psychological and symbolic style of Japanese horror is the scariest of all, and The Mimic takes this idea and runs with it. Case in point: CTStudio’s bone-chilling scare ’em up is inspired by a bunch of Japanese urban legends, like the vampiric spirit Hiachi, which is essentially heavily influenced by a “real-life” Yokai from eastern culture called Hachishakusama.
In total, there are four books, and each one represents a different chapter. In essence, you’ll assume the role of a character who inevitably becomes embroiled in a face-off against a deadly entity known as The Mimic. What’s interesting is that the evil entity at the heart of it all can shape-shift, which means that you’ll need to be vigilant as you explore the haunted hallways of the cursed locales.
1. Dead Silence
Proudly ranked as the number one scariest game on Roblox — according to not only us, but the game’s official description — is none other than DoomX10’s Dead Silence. Loosely based on the James Wan-directed 2007 pic of the same name, this horror experience centers on a creepy ventriloquist doll called Billy Ashen who goes on a blood-drenched killing spree.
Played with up to four players, this first-person horror-adventure sees you venturing into a railway station to unravel the mystery behind the murder of Mary Shaw. Demonic rituals, evil cults, heart-wrenching jump scares, and a deeply disturbing atmosphere is the order of the day. When we say this isn’t for the faint of heart, we ain’t kidding around. Seriously, only the most fearless and courageous need apply.
That does it for our scariest Roblox horror games list. If you’re interested in any, they’re all available to play for free on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Android, iOS, and PC.
