For those prepared to follow Samira’s journey in League of Legends, you’ll want to follow our Tournament of Souls guide and tips. It’s standard for Riot to release massive events every summer, like adding new skins, event passes, and metagame modes. The Tournament of Souls is the latest metagame to join the ranks. It’s a fighting-game-styled mode that accompanies the Soul Fighter mode and focuses on Samira as she battles other Soul Fighters, pushing through the ranks to become champion. We’ll break everything down so you know what to expect and how to navigate the event.

The Tournament of Souls lasts from July 20 to August 28, 2023. When you launch League of Legends, navigate to the following to find it:

  • Select the “Home” tab
  • Choose “Tournament of Souls” at the top left
  • Select “Launch” and then “Play”

You’ll notice that it has a visual novel quality to it. There’s a fun story that goes along with everything, so feel free to take time and read up on Samira’s story. Additionally, you’ll notice the Tournament of Souls guides you along quite well at the start. Also, you can choose either “Story” mode or “Expert” mode. As a beginner, we recommend following the “Story” mode.

The first fight encounter is with Jhin. There’s a brief tutorial section that details what you must do. However, we still have some Tournament of Souls tips and a basic rundown below. Remember that it plays differently than the regular League of Legends game:

  • Samira’s Ability Controls:
    • Q (Gun Abilities)
    • W (1st Sword Abilities)
    • E (2nd Sword Abilities)
    • R (Neutral)
  • Timed Battles: You’ll lose if you don’t defeat the opponent in time.
  • Health: Each fighter has a health bar. The first to 0 loses.

After you finish the introduction battle, you’ll soon see the map where you must battle 10 Soul Fighters. You must unlock Reputation Points to unlock the battles. Note your Reputation in the bottom left-hand corner when you’re on the Tournament of Souls screen or above Samira’s name when you launch the game.

Without Reputation Points, you cannot fight the other Soul Fighter champions. The best Tournament of Souls tips we can offer is to play the game. Jump into your usual League of Legends matches. There are several Soul Fighter Missions that will grant you Reputation Points. Everything listed below requires matchmade games to count, and each Mission offers the reward of 1000 LoL Event XP and 5 Reputation Points:

Mission 1 Get 20 Takedowns OR Earn 250 Points from playing/winning games
Mission 2 Kill 12 Champions OR Earn 400 Points from playing/winning games
Mission 3 Gain 55 Vision Score OR Earn 500 Points from playing/winning games
Mission 4 Kill 250 lane Minions OR Earn 500 Points from playing/winning games
Mission 5 Kill 200 Jungle Monsters OR Earn 500 Points from playing/winning games
Mission 6 Deal 7000 damage to turrets OR Earn 500 Points from playing/winning games
Mission 7 Gain 60 Crowd Control Score OR Earn 550 Points from playing/winning games

Mission 9 Deal 23,000 physical and true damage to champions OR Earn 600 Points from playing/winning games
Mission 10 Deal 19,000 magic and true damage to champions OR Earn 650 Points from playing/winning games

Some Tournament of Souls tips for you is to play to your strengths. If you’re new to League of Legends, you’re probably through the initial tutorial mode to get into matches. Stick to “Intro” or “Beginners” if you select the Co-Op vs. AI mode.

If you want more challenges, try the Arena Missions centered around the new Arena mode. You can play the Arena solo or with friends, but you’re up against three other teams.

When you have the Reputation Points, you’ll access the following champions on the map:

  1. Gwen
  2. Lux
  3. Naafiri
  4. Jhin
  5. Pyke
  6. Evelynn
  7. Sett
  8. Shaco
  9. Viego
  10. God’s Eye Viego

You can check Samira’s Abilities at any time. Select the “Edit” button near her name when you view the map. As you battle through the Soul Fighters, you’ll unlock new ones. We’ve listed all Abilities below:

  • Q Abilities:
    • Quick Shot: 60 damage | 4-sec cooldown | Fires a fast shot, but when used to change weapons, fires twice
    • Piercing Precision: 210 damage | 4-sec cooldown | Breaks shields
    • Deadshot: 70 damage | 4-sec cooldown | Causes bleeding for 160 damage
  • W Abilities:
    • Sky Scraper: 230 damage | 10-sec cooldown | Sends enemies airborne
    • Back Atcha: 60 damage | 8-sec cooldown | Blocks damage/status effects and reflects 500 damage back for 1 second
    • Blade Drain: 175 damage | 10-sec cooldown | Heals 250
  • E Abilities:
    • Severe Strike: 265 damage | 8-sec cooldown | Inflicts wounded for 4 seconds and refreshes bleed if bleeding
    • Twilight Rush: 100 damage | 8-sec cooldown | Break shields and places a sticky bomb that explodes for 130
    • Style on ‘Em: 230 damage | 6-sec cooldown | Gain an additional style point
  • R Abilities:
    • Chaotic Daybreak: 700 damage | 0-sec cooldown | Increase crit chance from 25% to 75% for 10 seconds
    • Immortal Inferno: 550 damage | 0-sec cooldown | Heals 500

Simply cycling through any Ability you want will win the battle with Gwen. However, you want to focus on the other Abilities when you unlock them. For instance, Lux has strong shields, so you need Piercing Precision. Also, if you use your R Ability when her shield is up, it’ll do more damage to the shield and not to her health.

These are just a few Tournament of Souls tips to get you going. Hopefully, you’ll work through the champions and earn all the cool rewards.
