It is impossible to satisfy every fan. True Detective: Night Country showrunner Issa López took to X, formerly Twitter, to ask fans to leave a positive score after audience reviews started to turn negative from “bros and hard-core fanboys of S1.” The HBO series is currently receiving praise from critics, but its audience score is dipping from these audience members.
The post comes in a day after the pilot hit HBO and Max. Critic scores were released a few days before, which praised this dark season. Now that audiences are able to see it, we are seeing some division among longtime fans of the anthology series.
What Is Going on With True Detective: Night Country Reviews According to the Showrunner
As of writing, the reviews for True Detective: Night Country landed the season 92% from critics and a passable 64% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. One fan of López wrote in to say, “Issa Lopez may not be a household name for American audiences, but TRUE DETECTIVE: NIGHT COUNTRY – starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis – may very well change that.” Compared to the first season, one user wrote that it was “as good as or better than Season 1.” With the horror aspects, it reminded one user of a John Carpenter classic as they wrote, “Fantastic opener of a season. If you are a fan of The Thing, the vibes are there for this show.”
Not everyone was pleased with this women-led, horror-influenced take on the crime anthology series. One user wrote, “More girl, power, huh? OK, as long as Jody is leading the way, I’ll tune in.” Another was unhappy with the grounded side of the story and felt the potentially supernatural elements were a whiff as they wrote, “Not interested in Ghost stories when all the other seasons we based firmly on reality. The reality is that this season so far sucks.”
When it comes to reviews of True Detective: Night Country, it is on the positive side for critics when compared to the other seasons but somewhere in the middle for audiences. Critic scores on Rotten Tomatoes for the other seasons are 91% (season 1), 47% (season 2), and 84% (season 3). Meanwhile, audiences landed at 87% (season 1), 20% (season 2), and 49% (season 3).
True Detective: Night Country is airing its run on HBO and its streaming service Max every Sunday.
