The current state of public affairs concerning the Middle East and the U.S. has been alarming recently. In particular, the situation in the Middle East and the escalation of conflict between Israel and Iran, which President Trump has been trying to mediate. In a recent interview in Washington, D.C., he had some unflattering comments about the two countries after a breach of the recently established ceasefire agreement. This was a striking moment, particularly given the significance of a U.S. President using profanity on national television.
The president’s specific words come from a short clip taken from a brief interview with President Donald Trump just before he boards a helicopter. It’s unclear exactly where he will be going once he boards the aircraft, though we do know that he won’t be very happy. Just before turning around, he tells a film crew and interviewer that both Israel and Iran, “don’t know what the f— they’re doing.”
Realistically, there isn’t any appropriate moment for a president to use a curse word on television, especially when it is concerning foreign affairs. So, in the grand scheme of things, it’s actually pretty jarring to hear this come out so casually. Commenters on the Reddit thread discussing the clip appear to feel the same, with one saying, “Well, that was jarring watching and hearing a current US President drop the F word.”
Many commenters even compare the moment to when Barack Obama wore a tan suit in 2009, which gathered widespread attention for some reason. However, because it’s not Obama, people don’t care nearly as much. This also proves how numb the populace as a whole has become to President Trump’s antics.
Regarding the conflict between Iran and Israel, both nations have allegedly violated their ceasefires, and Trump is focused on maintaining them. The United States has been a part of many wars targeting the Middle East, and considering the death tolls, I’d like to think that we wouldn’t want to be a part of that again.
