American voters gave the Canadian flag a standing ovation during a town hall meeting in Spokane, Washington. “So the things that frighten me is the way this insane President talks about Canada as a 51st state,” a concerned voter tells Representative Michael Baumgartner. “How does this person qualify as sane? Why is he not being impeached right now?” she concludes, after which a massive cheer erupted from the entire room. Several voters then stood up to wave the Canadian flag, causing the crowd to become even more lively.
Unfortunately for him, Baumgartner’s response to the protestor’s remarks and the audience’s support for Canada was anything but sane. “I don’t support us absorbing Canada,” the Trump-supporting lawmaker said hesitantly in a video recorded by CNN. “Canada is much more liberal and left-wing than the United States,” he continued. “Taking Canada would be like taking another California. It would tilt things towards the Democrats,” he spluttered, completely missing the point that Canada is a sovereign nation and instead focusing on votes and “Republican control.”
The Washington representative continued to embarrass himself by spitting out more nonsense: “If we could get Greenland peacefully, I’m all for it, and we should have never given up Panama.” His outlandish remarks were immediately met with boos and disdain from the crowd. Needless to say, online users felt the same amount of contempt for the GOP lawmaker. “Wrong answer, homie. This anti-principled take that avoids acting like a grown-up and recognizing sovereignty is exactly what everyone is tired of,” remarks a Redditor. Plenty of others commented in agreement, pointing out his insincerity and illogical responses to such serious matters.
The comments were also full of happy Canadians who were pleasantly surprised to see their flag waved at an American town hall meeting, with sensible voters coming to their defense. “As a Canadian, that was emotional to listen to. Thank you to our American friends. ❤️” states a grateful user. “Never had I thought the Canadian flag would become a resistance symbol. Beautiful,” chimes in another. “These are what ‘good Americans’ look like,” remarks a third.
It’s lovely to see plenty of Americans are willing to take a stand against the irrational decisions the US government is attempting to make.
