In the distant past, before the collective creative output of all of humanity was available at your fingertips, we got bored. When it was raining on the weekend, or during summer break, or maybe if you were visiting your grandparents and didn’t have anything to do, there was always Monopoly. Rules varied from household to household, and some were mere suggestions at best, but a game of Monopoly would kill an afternoon, and often put a significant strain on a friendship. Known by almost everyone and beloved by few, Monopoly has made the jump to the video game world many times before, recently on the Switch in 2017, and has come out in many, many different physical versions. While Monopoly has always been, well, Monopoly, Ubisoft’s announcement of Monopoly Madness promises to mix up the formula.

Check out the new trailer, released today:

ANNOUNCE TRAILER | MONOPOLY MADNESS

Looks like Uncle Pennybags is taking a bit of a vacation, and perhaps bringing some wacky characters with him. Or maybe they live there? It’s not clear. Regardless, judging from today’s announcement of Monopoly Madness it seems that you’ll meet:

  • An angry purple penguin
  • A shaggy dog who looks to be wearing a Sherlock Holmes outfit
  • A dinosaur
  • Some kind of robot, cat, fish, pirate captain, regular person wearing headphones, and person with a pumpkin for a head
  • What looks to be a ripoff of/homage to Macho Man Randy Savage (RIP)

Oh…yes?

Gameplay looks to be a lot more frenetic in Monopoly Madness, with less dice rolling and waffling about whether to shell out 100 bucks for Vermont Avenue, and more vacuuming up money and running over your opponents with bulldozers. Monopoly purists might balk at seeing the Macho Man demolish a penguin’s restaurant, but progress waits for no one. After all, this isn’t called Monopoly Reasonable, it’s Monopoly Madness.

The game promises four unique environments, each with its own levels, for over 20 environments in which to play. It’s coming out sometime in December and will be available on PS4, Switch, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia.
