A California resident shared quite the heartbreaking photo on r/pics of a homeless person’s living space surrounded by trash bags and a single, large American flag. “Unhoused Patriotism” was the title Reddit user PhD_Life gave to their post, implying that this unfortunate individual, despite having no roof over their head, still desired to show dedication to their country with the flag. Many online users found the image quite tragic, while a handful of cynical Redditors deemed the scene ironic.
While OP didn’t provide any context beyond their post’s symbolic title, plenty in the comments believed the homeless person with the American flag must have been in the military at some point. “There is a good chance that this is a veteran with various mental and health care conditions,” wrote a Reddit user. “And the country they fought for does not really seem to care about all that‽” they questioned with a harsh tone.
“These fascists hate the homeless. They’d prefer they be tossed in a mass grave,” remarked a rather critical commenter. Unfortunately, there are far-right extremists who do feel this way, with Fox News Brian Kilmeade having gone viral last year for wishing “involuntary lethal injection” on homeless people. Unfortunately for Trump supporters sympathetic to homeless people, the President remarked how he wanted them to move far away from D.C. to make the city “safer and more beautiful.”
And while Trump’s main attention has been elsewhere in recent months, the Redditors commenting on the post of the homeless person with an American flag believe the government is at fault. “Kinda sums up the current administration,” pointed out a user. “Nice advert of the tRUMP economy,” grumbled another. “They are winning so much. Hopefully they get tired of that soon,” sarcastically wrote a third.
Other veterans suffering from homelessness have shared their rough situation on Reddit before, many feeling like the ‘system’ makes it tough for them to improve their lives. Things haven’t been getting better either, with the National Alliance to End Homelessness reporting in 2025 that homelessness has increased by 18% since 2023.
Instead of looking upon homeless people with sympathy, the heated political climate has led many to see examples like “Unhoused Patriotism” as nothing more than another reason to criticize ‘the other side,’ be it the government or another political party. At the very least, people are aware that it is a growing problem.
