There are a lot of things in this world that I would never do, and drinking lemonade that’s over a decade old is one of them. Unfortunately, a University of Massachusetts student decided to learn the hard way what happens if that’s ever a thought that crosses your mind. Turns out, you’ll end up getting your stomach pumped because of the very real fear of botulism happening. Yeah, maybe think twice next time.
The above video, posted to the TikTok account @bigbluethefish, features the original poster, Blue the Fish, explaining what happened after his video about drinking 14-year-old lemonade went viral. In that original video, Blue explains that he had discovered a jug of lemonade that had expired 14 years prior in his basement. Instead of, you know, tossing it out like a normal person would, he decided to drink it. After drinking a shot glass filled with the brownish-yellow liquid, you can see that he almost immediately regrets it.
In the above follow-up video, he informs his viewers that, as a result of the previous video, he needed to have his stomach pumped for fear of getting botulism. He calls it the ‘incident,’ but we all know he did it willingly. Even his roommate, who walked into the dorm room at the same moment Blue was filming, testified that he had been in the hospital. Tons of commentators were happy to discover he was okay, but many others were quick to jump on the jokes wagon.
In fact, one of the top comments said, “bro was taste testing botulism.” Personally, my favorite comment of them all was, “Put it back in the fridge and let’s make this a yearly tradition.” Hopefully, Blue actually threw away the bottle of spoiled lemonade immediately after the initial video.
For those unaware, botulism is an incredibly serious and almost fatal medical condition that can be contracted through ingesting or breathing in particular bacteria. Since the lemonade was so old, there was no way for Blue to tell whether that specific bacteria was inside. However, just by judging the color, I think he should have just left it alone and assumed it wasn’t safe to drink.
Blue has since posted follow-up videos that show him in great health, eating lobster, and even posting a PSA to let viewers know that he isn’t sponsored by the specific lemonade brand he drank. Considering how terrible botulism can be, I’m glad he’s in great spirits.
