Everyone has their own unique interests, and while we shouldn’t judge, it’s hard not to when things are somewhat questionable. One man in Montana in particular has quite the unique keepsake in his room: a 6-year-old banana. As gross as that initially sounds, the man assures Reddit that his aged fruit of a memento has no odor and is as hard as a rock. In other words, it’s now “petrified,” more or less. He now keeps it hanging in his room above his door as a decoration since it “looks funny.”

According to the banana fossil’s lore, the man found it in his room years ago when he lived in Alaska, where the environment was cooler for the banana to fossilize. “I have to hide bananas from my dog,” he explains. Apparently, this banana was one of several that he hid; this one was tucked away on the back of his entertainment center, where it fell and was forgotten. Now, it serves as his special keepsake.

“This is the right subreddit for you that’s for sure,” notes one commenter, referring to how the eccentric Montana banana man posted his relic on r/strange, which is quite fitting. Some joked that he should consider using it for baking banana bread. But considering how hard it is, on top of being over half a decade old, he might as well put a stick of wood into the bread instead.

“I don’t know how to feel about this,” another commenter remarks. “I am both intrigued by this strange specimen and confused how one loses a banana in their room.” As odd as this situation might seem, apparently, this Montana man is not alone in his banana-fossilization endeavor. “I’ve had this one since March 2020, I hang it in my office,” chimes in a user, posting a photo in the comments of his own mummified banana. Truly, it’s a strange hobby to have, but it’s definitely a one-of-a-kind thing to do, for sure.
