Visitors trying to see loved ones at the Delaney Hall ICE Detention Center in New Jersey are reporting that they are being turned away over what they describe as unclear and unreasonable dress code rules. Many say they were not aware such strict requirements even existed before arriving.
The story comes from a report by The News Movement, which posted a video on Instagram that received more than 17,000 likes and hundreds of comments. The clip was later reposted to Reddit, where it gained over 1,000 upvotes on the EyesOnICE subreddit, expanding the discussion across platforms.
According to the report, around 30 people are turned away each day by the New Jersey ICE Detention Center. Visitors said that even when they tried to follow the rules, enforcement appeared inconsistent and sometimes changed without notice. While the dress code is available online, several people said it is difficult to find and not clearly presented to those planning visits.
Volunteers have stepped in to help by bringing extra clothing for men, women, and children, while also trying to track the current rules. One volunteer described a case where a mother was denied entry to the ICE Detention Center because her baby was not wearing shoes.
In another instance, visitors were turned away for wearing blue clothing. One woman said she had previously been allowed in wearing the same pants, but was later denied and had to borrow oversized clothing from volunteers in order to see her husband.
Backlash Over New Jersey ICE Detention Center Dress Code
Online reactions were largely critical. Many users argued that the rules at the New Jersey ICE Detention Center seem unreasonable and create unnecessary obstacles. “The cruelty is the point,” one Reddit user wrote. Others praised the volunteers for helping visitors navigate the situation.
“Thank you to all the volunteers that are doing everything they can to reduce the harm caused by these inhumane immigration policies. We need to overturn this policy of detaining people with pending immigration cases,” another user commented. Some also encouraged people to donate spare clothing, while others pointed out that the dress code for women appeared significantly longer than for men.
The story is gaining attention because it combines a widely shared video, firsthand accounts, and a clear emotional impact. The idea that families could be repeatedly turned away over unclear or shifting rules at the ICE Detention Center has resonated with viewers, especially as more details continue to circulate online.
