A woman living in Utah is currently facing intense backlash on TikTok after she shared a video showing herself driving four hours to surprise her husband while he was away on a boys’ trip. The content creator decided to make the long drive with her cousin to the Airbnb where her husband and a few of his friends were staying for the trip.
Since the men were not home when they arrived and had reportedly left the front door unlocked, she and her cousin were able to walk right into the house and immediately started setting up what they clearly believed would be a memorable and funny prank.
The woman dressed her cousin, whom her husband had not seen in quite some time, in a bright green wig, painted her face, and put her in a whimsical outfit that resembled a playful costume. The look was intentionally over the top, designed to be startling enough to draw strong reactions the moment the men walked in.
Their Reactions Did Not Disappoint
As soon as her husband and his friends returned to the Airbnb, the woman hid herself down the hallway and left her cousin standing alone in the kitchen and dining area. Recognizing her cue to begin, the cousin immediately started playing the iconic Willy Wonka Oompa Loompa song on her phone and began dancing to it, stepping side to side with her arms raised before dipping into light squats and popping back up again in rhythm.
The first friend to walk in quickly stopped in his tracks as soon as he spotted the odd-looking stranger dancing in the middle of their rental. Moments later, the husband entered and froze as well, clearly stunned by what he was seeing. As the rest of the men peeked in to understand what was happening, the cousin continued dancing without breaking character.
From the footage, it appeared that the husband initially thought the dancing figure was his wife. He was the only one who approached her, asking how she had even managed to get into the house. When the “woman” failed to respond and kept dancing, he moved closer, only to suddenly realize it was not his wife at all.
That was when he cringed and instinctively moved away. After a moment, the wife finally emerged from the hallway laughing, clearly pleased that she had successfully pulled off the surprise. Even her husband’s friends laughed along, and the moment ended on what appeared to be a lighthearted note inside the Airbnb.
Netizens Drag the Utah Woman for “Ruining” the Trip
Although the woman meant the moment to be a lighthearted surprise and playful prank, some netizens felt it was downright embarrassing and believed she had crossed an unspoken line. One person wrote, “I’ve never felt more secondhand embarrassment 😩😭 poor husband omg.” Another asked sarcastically, “How can I ruin a man’s weekend & make everything about me?” A third commented, “He went four hours away on the boys trip to get away from all of you, not to have you surprise him.” A fourth added, “May a love like this never find me.”
However, others did not agree with the backlash and found humor in the video. “These comments are so weird. I don’t see any red flags. They don’t seem bothered at all lol,” one netizen remarked. Another said, “Okay but this is actually funny… people need to take a chill pill,” while someone else chimed in, “I don’t know why everyone is hating, I thought this was funny 😂.”
The video has since gained more than 4 million views and over 250,000 likes. The playful teasing shown in the clip is also very typical of the woman’s other content, as she frequently posts videos of herself pranking family members or joking around with her husband, which may explain why she did not expect this moment to be received any differently.
Husband Responds in a Tongue-in-Cheek Update
After seeing the volume of criticism rolling in, the woman posted a humorous follow-up video in which she filmed her husband reading a statement as if he were being forced to say it, while she stood over him holding a golf club.
“I love my wife. She’s not crazy. My friends love my wife. They were so happy she was there,” he said, pausing awkwardly between sentences. “My wife is not an attention [expletive] at all. I love my wife. Plus she loves me. I have already been invited to the next boys trip.”
Seems like the husband is leaning into the humor.
