Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is not a title that rolls off the tongue. However, because Luc Besson is directing, we should let that go.

Besson’s previous works include The Professional and The Fifth Element. With such an amazing resume, we’re more than a little excited for his newest work Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is based on a French science fiction comic series. Valerian and Laureline follows the adventures of the titular two through space and time. The series is considered an important landmark in modern pop culture. Movies like Star Wars and The Fifth Element also draw influences from this comic series.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets Official Teaser Trailer

Besson announced his plans to adapt the comic back in 2012. Valerian and Laureline have been cast and will be played by Dane Dehaan and Cara Delevigne. Mr Besson is filming his newest project in France. The movie can’t claim tax credits due to it being filmed in English.

Imdb also tells us that there is a romance subplot between Valerian and Laureline. Valerian is apparently attempting to romance Laureline. Yet, his reputation of chasing after women puts her off. The Thousand Planet city is also not much of an exaggeration. Alpha City has seventeen million inhabitants from many different species. These species designed Alpha City to be the pinnacle of galactic civilization. Yet shadowy forces seek to undermine all of this – could this movie end up having an unhappy ending?

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets also stars Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, Herbie Hancock and Kris Wu. A EuropaCorp production, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets opens in theaters on July 21, 2017.
