Velma is coming back for season 2, and it’s supposed to be spookier than ever before. The animated series made a splash when it came to Max in 2023, with some fans turned off by how drastically different the tone was to Scooby Doo‘s usual tone, but it still received a season 2 order not long after it’s premiere. Velma season 2 is coming to Max later this month, and a new trailer starring Mindy Kaling as Velma promises that the new season is going to be even darker and spookier than the last.
Velma Season 2 Trailer Shows Dissected Brains, Dead Bodies, and…Grave Robbing?
Velma premiered on Max in 2023, the newest Scooby-Doo reboot centered around an alternate universe origin story where the Mystery Inc. gang is a team of high school students involved in a “love quadrangle.” The series is led by snarky teenage detective Velma Dinkley (Mindy Kaling) who’s trying to figure out who’s behind the murder of some local teenage girls. Velma has a crush on Fred Jones (Glenn Howerton), a slightly dim 16-year-old fashion heir, and “complicated feelings” for Daphne Blake (Constance Wu), a popular girl and her former best friend. Velma’s current best friend is Norville “Shaggy” Rogers (Sam Richardson), a school news reporter with a crush on her who loves snacks and, notably, hates drugs.
Unfortunately, season 1 of Velma the animated series garnered some strong reactions from Scooby-Doo fans who were shocked at the darker tone the show took. It’s not hard to see why they were surprised: Fred’s a murder suspect, Velma’s suffering from guilt-based hallucinations after her mother disappeared, and Shaggy is very clear about his anti-drug message. The show didn’t score highly with critics either, despite the praise regarding its voice acting and animation, but bad publicity is still publicity. Velma season 2 was reportedly in the works not long after the first season dropped, and if the new trailer is to be believed, the show’s really doubling down on its “not your parent’s Scooby-Doo” message as it promises “more mystery, more romance, and more meddling.”
Velma season 2 will be ten episodes long and will be coming to Max on April 25th. Mindy Kaling, Glenn Howerton, Constance Wu, and Sam Richardson will all star. Charlie Grandy will executive produce alongside Kaling, Howard Klein, and Elijah Aron. The new season’s guest stars will include big names like Russell Peters, Melissa Fumero, Sarayu Blue, Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, Cherry Jones, Frank Welker, Nicole Byer, Gary Cole, Andia Winslow, and Sara Ramirez.
