Marvel is reuniting Venom’s co-creator with Eddie Brock in a new retro series. David Michelinie, who helped bring Venom to life alongside Todd McFarlane, is returning for Venom: Separation Anxiety. The new five-issue series will focus on the early days of Eddie Brock and his parasitical hitchhiker. Together, the two will face off against the mind-controlling Zebediah Killgrave AKA the Purple Man. This marks Michelinie’s return to the character he helped create since 2022’s Venom: Lethal Protector.

David Michelinie is back in the world of Venom for the upcoming limited series. Dubbed a “retro” series, Venom: Separation Anxiety will transport readers to the early days of Eddie Brock and Venom’s “partnership.” Marvel shares that the series will focus on Killgrave using his mind-control powers to torment Eddie. However, when the Purple Man steals Brock’s symbiote for himself, things go from bad to worse. Now, Brock may need to ask for some help from some unlikely sources to get his symbiote back.

The cover for Venom: Separation Anxiety #1 comes from artist Paulo Siqueira. Siqueira is no stranger to the character, having worked on Lethal Protector and Carnage. This time around, the artist paid homage to Charles Vess’ iconic Web of Spider-Man #1. The issue saw Peter Parker finally separating himself from the symbiote. This, of course, eventually led the symbiote to seek out and bond with Eddie Brock.

David Michelinie is back for writing duties on the limited series— a no-brainer, considering they helped make the character. This time around, they had a lot of fun crafting a new story within a retro background. Especially one that forced them to break Brock and Venom apart once again. Michelinie knew they needed a villain who was evil and creepy enough to help drive a wedge between the two. Luckily, Killgrave was prime and ready to help in that area. The villain makes it so that when Eddie and his symbiote touch, it weakens them, all while making Killgrave stronger.

Venom: Separation Anxiety #1 is on sale 5/15.
