If you’re tired of the same old superhero film, Tom Hardy’s upcoming project might be just what you need. A new Venom trailer released today, and it shows off a substantial amount more of the character than anything we have seen so far. Check it out below, from the official Venom Twitter account:

Let’s break it down.
The first Venom trailer caught some flak for not showing much of the title character. There were little hints and glimpses of him, but it was mostly Tom Hardy looking scared and firing symbiote limbs out in different directions. This new trailer shows a LOT of the fully transformed Tom Hardy.
He’s suitably creepy. There is definitely a substantial Alien vibe going on: the symbiote is seriously slimy and wet.
And teeth. Lots of teeth. And the scene where he licks the guy? Gross.
That said, I’m still not 100 percent sure I buy into this. Venom’s voice is excellent, but there’s something about the way his mouth moves as he talks that drops me right out. Maybe because he doesn’t have lips, but his mouth still moves like he does? I don’t know – I feel like if you’re going to give him several long speeches in the trailer, you better make sure it looks perfect. Am I crazy?
Venom is a stand alone project, (supposedly) completely separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. How this will fit into the character’s origin and comic arcs remains to be seen. Tom Hardy stars as the title character and his alter ego, Eddie Brock.
Venom has a release date of October 5, 2018. It is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and also stars Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine) and Woody Harrelson (True Detective). I’ll never count out a Tom Hardy movie, but I remain a bit skeptical here. We will have more information on Venom as it becomes available.
