Sen. Bernie Sanders posted on X that the United States ranks 34th out of 35 countries in childhood poverty, with millions of children facing food insecurity. The Vermont senator suggested his Republican colleagues consider holding a hearing on improving the lives of American kids. The post has drawn significant online attention and backlash, with users reacting strongly to the message.

In America today, we rank 34th out of 35 countries in childhood poverty and millions of children are food insecure.

Maybe, just maybe, my Republican colleagues would consider holding a single hearing about how we improve the lives of American kids. pic.twitter.com/MV2V1rJFoG

During a recent Senate hearing, Sen. Bernie Sanders criticized the United States’ child poverty and healthcare outcomes, arguing that the country spends more than its peers while often producing worse results. At one point, Sanders says, “Our life expectancy is lower than other countries, despite spending twice as much per capita on healthcare as the people of any other countries.”

Sanders also raises broader points about Americans lacking guaranteed healthcare, lower life expectancy despite high spending, and criticizes what he describes as a Republican focus on base politics. The video does not provide any sources or data to support the ranking mentioned.

Readers Fire Back at Vermont Sen. Sanders’ Post

Some users questioned why similar measures were not pursued under previous Democratic administrations, with one writing, “Why didn’t you do it when the democrats were in power? Why didn’t Obama do it? Why didn’t Biden do it?”

Others criticized the senator’s long tenure and effectiveness. One commenter wrote, “How is the Oligarchy, Bernie? All those years and you have accomplished nothing except being part of the oligarchy.”

Another stated, “You’re all talk and no action, Bernie. You’ve been talking about the same [expletive] for 50 years, and the only one making money is you! You’re completely full of [expletive] Con-Artist! Typical Democrat scam artist!”

Some pointed to spending priorities or called for program changes. One user commented, “Maybe if we weren’t spending $150 billion annually on the illegals you imported as a power grab, we could lift some of those kids out of poverty.”

Another wrote, “You should be ashamed of those child poverty numbers! Instead of pointing out the facts, what is your solution to stop the theft and fraud? We need to rework these programs to make them more effective. What are your suggestions? Fix it or retire! We have enough talking heads in government.”

While Sanders’ remarks resonated with many viewers, others strongly disagreed with his criticism of the country’s priorities. The reaction online underscores how debates over child poverty, healthcare spending, and the role of government remain among the most contentious issues in American politics.
