A small Alabama town is reeling after its newly hired police chief abruptly resigned following the release of a disturbing surveillance video allegedly showing him sexually harassing an 18-year-old dispatcher inside the police department. Cordova Police Chief Jason Hare, a married father who had only been on the job for four months, stepped down on Monday, Mayor Jeremy Pate.
“We’re aware of information that is being circulated regarding a city employee,” Pate said in a statement to AL.com. “However, it is our practice not to comment on specified personnel matters. We take all reports of employee misconduct seriously and respond promptly and thoroughly.” According to Pate, the investigation is administrative only, meaning no criminal charges have been filed at this time.

The allegations stem from a department surveillance video reportedly recorded on August 26, 2025. In the footage, the teen dispatcher is seen sitting at her computer when Hare approaches from behind. A short time later, he begins playing with her hair. The young woman gestures for him to stop, but Hare continues to hover, leaning over her as if looking at the dispatch screen. Moments later, the chief appears to grab the dispatcher’s head and pull her toward him, then places his hands around her neck. The video has no audio.
A family member of the dispatcher told AL.com that the young woman was terrified to come forward because it was her first job and the alleged harasser was her boss, the police chief. “She wasn’t going to say anything,” the family member said. “She didn’t know what to do.” According to the family, it was another employee who noticed the incident on the surveillance footage and reached out to the teen to ask if she was okay. That employee then alerted supervisors, triggering the city’s internal investigation.
Community Reaction and Fallout
The city of Cordova, located in Walker County, has been left grappling with the fallout. Many residents expressed anger and disappointment online, questioning how such behavior could occur in a department meant to uphold public trust. Efforts to reach Hare for comment have been unsuccessful. As of Tuesday, city officials have not confirmed whether any disciplinary actions or further investigations will follow his resignation.
The dispatcher, whose identity has not been released due to her age and the nature of the allegations, is said to still be employed by the department. Her family says she remains shaken but is receiving support from loved ones.
