New York City emergency services field millions of calls each year, with estimates ranging from between 9 and 10 million. While many of these responses involve genuine emergencies, others stem from simple misunderstandings. A recent viral video underscored this point and showed a squad of five NYPD officers responding to a disturbance, only to discover that the neighbor had simply been watching a TV show too loudly.

The footage, captured on a neighbor’s Ring camera, centers on a group of five uniformed NYPD officers stood outside of a woman’s apartment. After knocking on the door to investigate, the female resident inside can be heard saying, “Hello?” As the cop leans against the doorway chewing gum, she replies formally, “Police. Can you just open the door for us so we can talk to you?“

The resident asks, “What for?” and the officer responds, “We having a lot of commotion going on. Just wanna make sure you guys okay? We heard yelling.” while another officer chips in and says, “Screaming.” The plot twist is quickly revealed, however, as the woman explains, “We’re not screaming. We’re watching Baddies.” With a smile on his face, one of the cops clarifies, “Is that a movie?” before the entire squad break into laughter.

It’s worth noting that Baddies is a popular US-based reality TV show that started in 2021 and involves plenty of dramatic verbal and physical altercations, which would explain the unintended commotion.

As expected, netizens found the viral video highly amusing, with many jumping into the comments to share their reactions. On Reddit, one commenter wrote, “Reasonable misunderstanding lol” while another described what the show is about, penning, “It’s a trashy show where the girls just on there to beat each others [expletive]. It’s stemmed from the bad girls club, but BGC was infinitely less trash (esp when it first started in the early 2000s)” Meanwhile, over on TikTok, one user commented, “Girl how loud was ya tv“. while another chipped in with, “The female officer knew what you were talking about 😂”

Thankfully, the callout was simply a misunderstanding, and no one was charged. But one thing is clear: maybe consider turning down your TV for the sake of your neighbors, right?
