Fierce backlash erupted against Governor Abigail Spanberger after a fatal case involving a middle-aged mother and an undocumented immigrant in Virginia. Both media commentators and social media users criticized the governor for previously supporting sanctuary laws, as well as Spanberger’s lack of cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.
The crime in question, as reported by ABC, involved the killing of a 42-year-old mother named Carmen Lizet Puch in Fairfax County. The accused is Alexis Antonio Cedillos-Campos, a 19-year-old man born in El Salvador, who reportedly entered the U.S. illegally in 2024, was apprehended, and later released.
The killing received additional attention due to its violence. As reported by Fox News, the alleged killer stabbed the woman several times and doused her in gas, igniting a fire afterward.
Fox News host Laura Ingraham commented on the case and criticized Abigail Spanberger, saying: “Remember HER ROLE in all this! She’s HAPPY to give sanctuary to them — INCLUDING TO THIS INDIVIDUAL,” and calling for her to resign.
Internet Reacts to Horrible Crime in Virginia
Many commenters on X were furious with Spanberger and the crime, linking the governor’s actions to the violent episode. One of them said: “Spanberger goes out of her way to protect these criminals instead of the people of Virginia.” Some even agreed that she should resign: “I would be happy to see her step down. I am a lifelong Virginian, and we all know that nothing is gonna happen here.”
Others criticized measures previously approved by Spanberger, such as the assault firearms ban: “People in Virginia are getting disarmed so savages like this can have free rein on them.”
Some seemingly right-wing voters also criticized Spanberger: “If there were a gubernatorial election held in Virginia TODAY and Spanberger was running, she would still win handily, aided by Fairfax and Loudoun counties. Virginia is Woke and mentally broken.”
However, a few users believed that the crime had no connection to the governor’s actions and accused others of turning the tragedy into politics: “That crime is genuinely horrifying, and public safety is a top priority for everyone. But turning a tragedy into partisan ammunition doesn’t keep communities safe.”
It remains to be seen how the case will affect Virginia residents’ views on illegal immigration and violent crime, as the controversy surrounding the incident appears far from settled.
