Virginia Gov. Spanberger Slammed After Calling Flock Camera Ban ‘Overly Simplistic’: ‘I Deeply Regret Voting For Her’

Flock cameras continue to be controversial

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger has recently addressed calls to ban the controversial Flock cameras, claiming that the idea is “overly simplistic.” This enraged Virginia residents, as many believed that her cautious approach to the issue meant she was in favor of spying on her voters.

As reported by WTOP News, Spanberger recently told the media that banning the technology outright was not the right course of action, but instead vowed to work with lawmakers to find a solution.

According to Spanberger, she’ll always protect the Fourth Amendment, but the question is how to use this technology responsibly and how the information will be shared, as it can help solve crimes.

Flock cameras are becoming increasingly controversial in the United States, and earlier this week, Republican state Sen. Glen Sturtevant revealed his intention to introduce legislation banning Flock cameras in the state.

One of Spanberger’s allies, Democratic Sen. Lashrecse Aird, took a more measured approach, saying that the state has been dealing with Flock and other surveillance companies to find solutions other than banning the technology.

Virginians React to Spanberger’s Comments on Flock Cameras

Spanberger’s response did not sit well with some Virginia residents on Reddit’s r/Virginia. Some of them could not seem to understand why the state should not do the same as other states: “Both Florida and Texas got rid of them on state highways. I like Spanberger but she’s flat out wrong on this. And they better not cancel the contract and switch to Axon. Nobody wants this much surveillance.”

Others disagreed with Spanberger’s claims that these cameras solve problems: “They don’t care about solving crime that affects the vast majority of people. You could be victim to a hit and run, a car break-in, a robbery or burglary, fraud, and scams and they will never lift a finger to solve those crimes for you. So far crimes that have used Flock for include being an undocumented immigrant, or traveling out of state for a needed abortion.”

Someone else wrote: “I refuse to let them solve crimes by violating my rights. They solved crimes for hundreds of years without these constitutional violations.” The outrage even led others to regret their votes for the Democrat: “I deeply regret voting for her as she’s proven to be everything that her detractors said she would be. I’ll never vote for her again nor any candidate she endorses. There’s just no trust here anymore.”

Some Virginians had even more nefarious ideas about why the governor was so resistant to the ban: “Abigail Spanberger wants to illegally spy on us. That’s why it’s ‘complicated.’” However, none presented any evidence to support these conjectures.

For Spanberger, the issue is unlikely to disappear anytime soon. Opposition to Flock cameras continues to grow in Virginia and across the country, and her rejection of an outright ban has clearly frustrated some of the people who helped elect her. Whether Virginia ultimately settles on tighter safeguards or follows other states toward broader restrictions remains to be seen, but the fight over the cameras is far from over.
