Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger has recently sent a budget amendment to the state’s House and Senate proposing an increase in the fines for using marijuana in public. The decision sparked the ire of some Virginia residents, who viewed the increase as unfair.
As reported by The Independent, Spanberger wants to raise the current fine for using cannabis in public spaces from $25 to $250, a 900% increase. According to the outlet, many of its critics are already calling the proposal a “poverty penalty.”
A group called Marijuana Justice alleges that the new fine would be enforced disproportionately against Black people, arguing that legalization often does not end “racially biased marijuana policing.” The group also said that a $250 fine is only a “minor inconvenience” for the wealthy, but it could be catastrophic for renters or people experiencing homelessness.
Virginia Residents Criticize Governor Spanberger’s Proposal
Virginia residents on Reddit’s r/Virginia chimed in on the controversy, with most criticizing the governor. Some users echoed Marijuana Justice’s arguments: “Remember: if the punishment is a fine, it’s only against the law for the poor.” Another added: “Aren’t fines inherently a tax on the poor? One fine could throw someone on the brink into homelessness or turning to crime. Yikes.”
One user seemed irritated that the fine itself even existed: “There is not a blanket ban on smoking tobacco in public. It is banned in specific public places mainly where there are going to be a lot of sick or young people. People just smoke outside of grocery stores on the street. Spanberger wants blanket criminalization of public marijuana consumption,” they said, criticizing the governor as well.
Another user argued that “a lot of people in this sub have never traveled internationally, and it shows. We’re one of the few developed countries with laws preventing alcohol consumption in public. Why is that a good thing? I’m really curious what problems that stance solves, given our country’s problems with littering.”
It remains to be seen whether the proposal will be approved by the House of Delegates and become law, but it has likely not helped the governor’s public image.
