Virginia Mother Outraged After City Installs Gunshot Sensor in Her Yard Without Permission: ‘We Descend Into Full-on Fascism’

A dystopian nightmare

A mother living in a Virginia neighborhood was outraged after the city installed a Flock gunshot sensor in her yard without permission. Going by Katililly on Reddit, the mother posted her situation on r/roanoke, explaining that the city had approved an encroachment for the installation of multiple sensors, 75 to be exact. Her private residence was not included in the city’s list of locations, nor had any authorities allegedly asked her before any construction was done.

“I feel invaded,” Katililly expressed, adding how she’s worried about backlash from her neighbors if they misunderstand that she agreed to the city compromising their privacy. “I don’t want to have unwarranted audio surveillance of myself and my children in our own home,” she wrote. Although the device is designed to listen for gunshots, Katililly explained that it can “hear human voices” too.

In other words, this device is essentially a “24-7 listening device” on her property; what’s worse is that it isn’t too far away from her house itself. “It’s 75 feet from my couch,” the mother wrote. She claims she called a police officer to report the matter. However, she was told the sensor was there legally, essentially telling her to accept this invasion of privacy for the sake of city law enforcement.

The Virginia Mother Claims She’s Fighting to Get the Flock Gunshot Sensor Removed

The Virginia mother has been actively responding to comments in her post for days, sharing how she’s determined to fight the city over this unpermitted gunshot sensor on her property. One aspect she’s found to be confusing is that other private properties where sensors were installed had been reportedly done with the owners’ consent. “Maybe it is just an honest mistake from the installation company or something,” she wrote hopefully.

Mistake or not, thousands of Redditors couldn’t believe how this could have happened. “I never thought I’d see the day where we would descend into full-on fascism, but it’s becoming increasingly evident these cameras and microphones are being installed to transform the entire country into an open-air prison,” remarked a commenter.

“This is absolutely unacceptable in every way imaginable,” exclaimed another. While many felt hopeless and outraged at this mother’s fate, plenty of others expressed hope, with some sharing resources and suggestions on how she could get help, such as reaching out to the city’s mayor.

One commenter beautifully expressed the shared hopeful sentiment of Redditors supporting this woman: “I feel so powerless to the nation-wide dumpster fire that’s happening, but this feels like something winnable. Let’s save this dudes yard from the surveillance camera.”
