A workplace looking out for its own would generally be considered an ideal place of employment, but this is anything but the case for the Kenbridge Police Department in Virginia. The small town’s police are being sued for $143.7 million by one Heather Burrow, a former police officer who almost lost her life when another cop, Charles Stokes, opened fire on her when she was trying to pick up her daughter from his home.
The reason was that she had called the police chief for protection from Stokes on the day of the incident. But instead, the chief allegedly let the rogue officer know what Burrow had requested. Fortunately, Burrow survived but suffered an injury to her shoulder. However, simply having Charles Stokes punished wasn’t enough.

With the incredibly bold $140 lawsuit, Burrow and her attorneys wanted as many people as possible to know about the chief of the Kenbridge Police Department’s gross negligence. Not to mention, she most certainly deserved heavy compensation after that traumatic and life-threatening situation with Stokes. According to WWBT, the rogue cop shooter isn’t listed in this Virginia lawsuit against the police but will be facing his own set of charges for trying to end Burrow’s life.
The fact that Burrow had contacted the police in the first place to protect herself against Strokes says volumes about what kind of person he is. Not to mention, police reports, per WTVR CBS 6, say that he was “furious that she involved others” in her issues with him after he was informed about her protection request. Generally, everyone has a reputation they want to uphold, but the way Strokes reacted in such a vengeful and violent anger doesn’t put him or the chief in a good light.
Kenbridge Police Chief Blamed For Choosing His Own Over a Civilian
“The police chief was protecting his own, at the expense of everyone around them,” exclaimed a commenter on Reddit. “That’s so messed up… how does this even happen?? protecting their own over actual lives smh,” reacted another. “This is gross negligence, and blatant sexism,” added a third. “Along with the city being sued, that police chief should go to jail. That wasn’t gross negligence. It was accessory to attempted homicide,” remarked a fourth.
Some used this terrible incident as a perfect example of why no one should date a cop. “Yep, not even men who are friends with cops,” agrees a Redditor. These days, with ICE brutality and distrust with police at an all-time high, it’s rather understandable that no one would want to have a relationship with an officer, especially with horrifying news storieslike this.
