A general rule of thumb is that monkeys are funny and almost all apes in movies raise a smile. Yet the monkeys in War for the Planet of the Apes are going to be an exception to this.

If the Planet of the Apes prequels have had a theme, it’s that humanity keeps making things worse. A human made drug elevated ape intelligence in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Most of the human race were also killed off as a result of virus that sprang from the same drug.
The new trailer shows us that War of the Planet of the apes seems like the tipping point. The point where the setting of the original movies becomes inevitable. While the human population has been ravaged, they still have the advantage of numbers. ‘War’ probably will be the point where they may start to lose that advantage.
Director Matt Reeves says that this movie is, consequently, an important moment for ape protagonist Caesar;
“As this story continues, we know that war is not avoided by the end of DAWN. That is going to take us into the world of what he is grappling with. Where he is going to be thrust into circumstances that he never, ever wanted to deal with, and was hoping he could avoid. And now he is right in the middle of it. The things that happen in that story test him in huge ways, in the ways in which his relationship with Koba haunts him deeply.”
War for the Planet of the Apes is set probably hundreds of years before the original movie. It’s unknown how close to that the prequel movies will get. Yet we know that humanity won’t be totally killed off in War because it’s been confirmed that there is another movie planned.
