When Amazon drivers hit the 150th stop on a mail route, it isn’t hard to think that their minds would have started to drift with all the monotonous labor. And when you have to do that every day, one unlucky delivery is bound to occur eventually. Unfortunately for one DSP driver in Washington, that one unlucky delivery cost him his job. He was at a housing complex when he accidentally drove into the carport’s roof. But that wasn’t all; he somehow lost his work phone all on the same day.
It should be no surprise that the DSP driver was shortly terminated, the reasons being preventable property damage and loss of company property. In his post on r/AmazonDSPDrivers sharing his mishap, he claims that he “never had an accident before this.” “It was definitely inattentiveness,” he says, saying that his “the 80+ apartment stops on a 189 stop route was grinding my brain into a sleep deprived mush.” Though, if he came to Reddit seeking sympathy, he might have come to the wrong subreddit, as plenty of people were quick to criticize his carelessness.
Reddit Complains How Many DSP Drivers Are Poorly Trained to Drive Their Vans
“DPS folks just cant get that height right and hit lots of things, I’ve noticed,” sighed a commenter. Several others blamed the lack of training that Amazon gives drivers on how to properly handle the delivery van, given how it is proportionally different from other vehicles. “I mean thats is THOUSANDS of dollars worth of damage and absolutely preventable,” exclaimed a Redditor. “Regardless of damage even a little scratch is going to be minimal $600 that how much then pannels cost,” remarked another. “I don’t know about thousands, probably A thousand,” OP agreed.
According to JW Outdoor Structures, the first comment about the costs being thousands could be correct, with $500 to $2,500 being the estimate for minor wooden carport repairs. Of course, the actual amounts would be handled by the DSP and the property owner, but it would still be a hassle. This isn’t the first accident someone on Reddit has reported regarding a mail driver and a damaged carport, either. At least this Washington driver came clean about his mistake, whereas a South Carolina FedEx driver drove off after smashing up a homeowner’s carport.
