California Governor Gavin Newsom met with French Ecological Transition Minister Monique Barbut and signed a letter of intent for a new climate partnership focused on mitigation strategies, extreme heat, wildfire resilience, and clean water access. The agreement, announced on X from California and building on prior cooperation, drew a wave of critical replies questioning the use of taxpayer funds and the value of additional climate deals amid high energy costs in the state. Online discussion centered on whether the partnership would deliver practical benefits or add further expenses for residents.

Great to meet with French Ecological Minister Monique Barbut and sign a new climate partnership to build on our existing cooperation and collaborate on climate mitigation strategies, extreme heat and wildfire resilience, access to clean water, and more.

The post states that Newsom met with French Ecological Minister Monique Barbut and signed a new climate partnership. According to the text, the agreement builds on existing cooperation and covers collaboration on climate mitigation strategies, extreme heat and wildfire resilience, access to clean water, and related areas, with California expressing pride in working with France to advance a green, climate-smart economy.

Official statements from the Governor’s office confirm that Newsom and Barbut signed a letter of intent in San Francisco. The California Environmental Protection Agency is set to coordinate California’s side and develop an action plan with the French ministry. It is not clear from the X post alone what specific funding or binding commitments, if any, are involved.

Online Reactions to the California-France Climate Partnership Announcement

Many commenters focused on costs to California taxpayers and existing high energy bills. One wrote, “Add another $200-$300 to my monthly power bill. It’s already $800 per month.”

Another said simply, “More money to throw away!” while a third described it as “Yet ANOTHER newscum grift of American tax dollars.”

Others questioned the value of the climate partnerships themselves and labeled them as scams or schemes. One reply stated, “So you’re promoting more of the climate scam… Whose money are you scamming now? Silly question… we know it’s the taxpayers of California.”

A similar comment asked, “How many of these useless climate deals are you going to sign?” and another called “Phony climate change programs” a “money-wasting liberal scheme.”
