This article is over 1 years old and may contain outdated information.

Have you gotten tired of all of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim ports and re-releases since the last decade? So does Bethesda, it seems. But no, that does not mean the studio is planning to release the latest entry to the ongoing RPG series any time soon. Instead, some leaks suggest that an Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion remake could be coming first before TES 6, with a 2025 release window.

According to a trustworthy insider eXtas1stv, TES 4: Oblivion the remake might be officially unveiled during The Xbox Direct stream in January 2025. Built on Unreal Engine 5, this update could bring Cyrodiil’s iconic landscapes into stunning modern visuals while keeping true to its roots. The project is said to have been in production since 2019 and developed by Virtuos Studios.

The Chinese studio is based in Singapore and has been involved in many AAA projects, including Hogwarts Legacy and Modern Warfare III. But right now, it’s publicly focusing its workload on the highly-anticipated Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater remaster.

This leak is a long time coming, as a July 2023 Reddit leak first fueled speculation about the project. The thread, reportedly created by an employee of Virtuos Studios, claimed it uses a hybrid development approach. The Elder Scrolls 4 remake is said to combine Oblivion‘s original Gamebryo engine with new Unreal Engine 5 enhancements. Although the thread was quickly scrubbed off the site, one of the subreddit moderators pinned it and basically confirmed the poster’s identity, further bolstering credibility.

Then came the ‘Microsoft mega leak,’ which spread like wildfire during the Xbox vs. FTC court case also in 2023. One of the documents leaked from the hearing mentioned both TES: Oblivion Remaster and Fallout 3 Remaster projects. While they were left unconfirmed at the time, recent developments suggest Virtuos might be behind both titles.

As noted in the mega leak documents though, Bethesda was heavily focused on Starfield and other immediate projects. Considering the studio has yet to set Elder Scrolls 6‘s release window, making a remaster could be a logical way to please hungry fans. On the other hand, Todd Howard told YouTuber MrMattyPlays that he has no plans to create Elder Scrolls-related side projects in the foreseeable future. “[The project] got to fill the needs of our fanbase, and our fans want a full next entry into the franchise,” explained Todd.

While it’s unclear whether the Elder Scrolls: Oblivion project is as real as the Daedra invasion or not, the buzz continues to grow. Between this and the Skyblivion Skyrim total conversion mod though, longtime Elder Scrolls fans would have a chance to revisit Tamriel with modern upgrades.
