With Halloween upon us, West Virginia residents might have another reason to sleep with the lights on. A new study has named the Mountain State the most haunted place in America, beating every other state when it comes to things that supposedly go bump in the night. But what exactly earned West Virginia this spine-chilling distinction? As it turns out, the numbers tell a rather spooky story.

According to a new study by Action Network, researchers examined several spooky factors to determine which states are supposedly the most haunted. These included reported ghost sightings, the number of cemeteries, abandoned towns, allegedly haunted locations, and even how often residents search for ghost-related topics online. After weighing the findings, West Virginia emerged as America’s most haunted state.

Interestingly, West Virginia’s biggest claim to paranormal fame isn’t its ghost sightings, but its cemeteries. According to the study, the Mountain State has a staggering 19,902 burial grounds, the highest number per resident anywhere in America. Researchers also recorded 619 reported ghost sightings and identified 104 ghost towns across the state. With numbers like those, it’s perhaps no surprise that West Virginia topped the spooky rankings.

West Virginia’s Ghost Stories Are Just as Chilling as the Numbers

Of course, West Virginia’s eerie reputation goes well beyond the numbers. One of its most famous legends is the Greenbrier Ghost, a tale dating back to 1897. According to local folklore, a young woman named Zona Heaster Shue appeared to her mother after her death, claiming her husband had murdered her. Remarkably, her mother’s suspicions helped prompt an investigation, which ultimately led to the husband’s conviction. Whether you believe the supernatural element or not, it’s certainly a chilling piece of Mountain State history.

Then there’s the infamous Mothman, a mysterious winged creature reportedly spotted around Point Pleasant in 1966. Witnesses described a towering figure with glowing red eyes, sparking a local legend that continues to fascinate visitors decades later. Whether it was something supernatural or simply a case of mistaken identity remains a mystery.

And West Virginia isn’t letting its fascination with the unexplained go to waste. Just in time for Halloween, the state’s Division of Motor Vehicles unveiled a new licence plate featuring nine legendary creatures, including Mothman and the Flatwoods Monster. The design celebrates the Mountain State’s rich folklore, with the plates going on sale November 2. Clearly, West Virginia is embracing its frightening claim to fame.
