‘We’ve Wasted $50 Billion’: Michigan Senate Candidate Abdul El-Sayed Mocked After Blaming Rising Gas Prices on War Spending

It’s so bad

Michigan U.S. Senate candidate Dr. Abdul El-Sayed’s latest campaign video has received mixed reactions on X. The ad, which was posted on Wednesday, showed the Democrat in full cycling gear pedaling a bicycle along rural roads as he discussed how U.S. war spending was inflating gas prices and leaving many Americans drowning in debt.

In the video he said, “The cost at the pump, five bucks a gallon, didn’t just happen. This is a function of a set of policy choices we keep making in this society. To fight wars, we have no business fighting. And the cost, well, you pay it at the pump and you pay it in taxes.”

El-Sayed said the war was essentially a waste of taxpayer funds. He argued that the money should have instead been used to help Americans struggling with medical care, rent, and gas affordability. “Just three months ago, gas was not this expensive,” he stated. “We’ve wasted $50 billion fighting a war nobody asked for. An illegal, unethical war.”

El-Sayed later stopped in front of a gas station sign displaying diesel prices above $6 a gallon. While pointing to it, he said prices like that contribute to grocery costs skyrocketing because trucks transporting food and goods rely heavily on diesel fuel.

The Senate candidate called for policy changes that would prioritize Americans at home instead of continued spending on overseas wars, which he argued was being pushed by corporations and politicians.

Public Reaction to Michigan Senate Candidate’s Campaign Ad

On X, netizens’ reactions underneath the post were sharply divided. Some were critical of the Democrat’s message. One person claimed he was spreading “socialist propaganda,” while another called him “a total fraud.” Someone else accused him of hypocrisy, saying, “I bet you didn’t bike under Biden when gas was higher!” A fourth remarked, “Vote for Republicans 💯🇺🇸 don’t let these politicians lie to you!”

At the same time, a few agreed with him about the struggles people were facing. One viewer admitted, “I’m literally thinking about buying an E-bike it’s so bad.”

So far, the video has continued to gain attention online, racking up tens of thousands of views on X.
