Buc-ee’s CEO Arch Aplin III is facing backlash after saying the Texas-based convenience store chain will increasingly prioritize expanding into “conservative, business-friendly” states. The remarks quickly spread across social media, where supporters defended the company’s approach while critics accused the popular travel center chain of turning its expansion plans into a political statement.

According to the San Antonio Express-News, Aplin made the remarks while celebrating the opening of Buc-ee’s first Arkansas location, saying the company increasingly wants to expand in communities it considers “conservative” and “business-friendly.”

He argued those states are more appreciative of the investment, jobs and economic benefits Buc-ee’s brings, adding that he would rather focus on places that welcome the chain than pursue projects in areas where it feels less valued.

Social Media Reactions

Social media users quickly weighed in after the remarks began circulating online, with Reddit commenters sharply divided over both Aplin’s comments and what they could mean for Buc-ee’s future expansion plans. While some defended the CEO’s stance, arguing businesses should invest where they feel most welcome, others accused the company of bringing politics into its business decisions.

Some users said the comments had changed how they viewed the popular Texas chain. One wrote, “My family has decided to avoid Buc-ee’s going forward,” while another remarked, “My answer to Buc-ees is to Buc-off.” A third commenter argued, “Business 101. Never mix politics with business,” while another compared the situation to country music icon Dolly Parton, writing, “The reason why Dolly Parton is so great at business is she never discriminates against people doing business with her.”

Not everyone agreed with the criticism, however. Some Reddit users dismissed the backlash altogether, with one writing, “What a bunch of snowflakes ❄️,” while another joked, “Oh no guess I’ll have to [expletive] for free somewhere else.” A separate commenter questioned the business logic behind the strategy, asking, “So dumb. What kind of fool leaves easy money on the table?”

The debate also highlights how closely consumers now scrutinize the public comments of business leaders. While some argued Buc-ee’s should be free to expand wherever it believes it will be most successful, others said political messaging risks alienating potential customers. Either way, Aplin’s remarks have ensured the company’s expansion plans are now being discussed far beyond where the next Buc-ee’s will be built.
