“What a joke!”: Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie says AIPAC’s been funneling money through ‘democracy engine’ as it quits directly funding candidates

So what’s really changing?

Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie criticized AIPAC’s decision to stop directly funding political candidates, accusing the group of funneling money elsewhere. The pro-Israel lobbying organization also announced plans to end candidate endorsements. Massie challenged the move on X on October 23, raising questions about its political financing and disclosure requirements.

What a joke! AIPAC has been funneling money through “democracy engine” instead of doing direct donations and bundling. I introduced a bill that would require AIPAC to disclose their influence campaigns just as others do under FARA. https://t.co/3cUZ4uq9O9

His response followed an October 22 report from The Washington Post announcing AIPAC’s decision. “What a joke!” he wrote, accusing the group of funneling money through “democracy engine” instead of making direct donations and bundling contributions. He also pointed to a bill he introduced that would require AIPAC to disclose its influence campaigns. The legislation would require those disclosures “just as others do under FARA,” he said.

Thomas Massie’s AIPAC Accusation Sparks Debate Over Political Funding

Massie’s remarks drew responses questioning AIPAC’s continued political influence, alongside criticism of the Kentucky Republican himself.

“AIPAC isn’t leaving American elections. It’s just moving the checkout counter,” one user wrote. Another questioned the funding arrangement: “Funny how every lobby needs a ‘democracy engine’ to route the money through. If it was clean, they’d just write the check with their name on it.”

The discussion also turned to transparency in political advertising. “AIPAC ads should be required to say ‘AIPAC,’” one response stated. Another argued, “disclosure shouldn’t be controversial if there’s nothing to hide.”

However, some demanded stronger restrictions. “We don’t want disclosure. We want a full on BAN of foreign funding,” one user insisted. A separate response called for broader campaign finance reform: “Get rid of Citizens United once and for all.”

Others directed their criticism at Massie. “Mr Massie you were not elected to introduce bills. You were primaried because you didn’t solve such things,” one user wrote.

Another questioned his political record: “Didn’t you vote for trump three times? You supported this.”

Whether Congress will advance Massie’s disclosure legislation remains unclear. The dispute over AIPAC’s political funding and disclosure requirements remains unresolved.
