California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced legislation that would make ballot seizures before election certification a felony. He said the proposal targets anyone interfering with California’s election process. The announcement gained attention after Newsom warned people assisting President Donald Trump they would face prosecution.
Newsom shared the announcement in a video posted on social media. The video quickly generated widespread discussion and divided reactions online.
Newsom warned, “If you violate California’s laws, if you interfere with our voters, tamper with our ballots, or meddle in our election, you will be prosecuted.” He added, “It doesn’t matter who gave the order.” Newsom also said the proposed legislation would make it “a felony to seize ballots before the vote has been certified by state and county officials.”
Newsom said California would be “the wall he cannot get past.” He said, “Once an election is decided, the winner governs for everyone.” Newsom concluded, “Donald Trump, he doesn’t believe in that architecture.”

Newsom’s proposal quickly fueled debate online, with many users questioning the purpose of the legislation and its effect on election oversight.
Several users echoed the concerns reflected in the discussion. One wrote, “What are you hiding? Someone with nothing to hide would welcome an audit of the voter rolls.” Another response stated, “So you are making it a crime to expose fraud?” A separate user argued, “Seems more like you are making it illegal to verify election results.” Another added, “Gavin Newsom making accountability in CA elections illegal.” One response read, “So u can cover up the fact your state cheats.” Another wrote, “Translation: ‘Don’t you dare expose our fraud before we’ve had a chance to commit it’.”
Newsom’s proposal had not become law in the material reviewed, and debate over the measure continued across social media.
