What do Axolotls eat in Minecraft?

If you want to raise an aquatic ranch of adorable Axolotls in Minecraft, knowing what this mob type eats is essential. Axolotls can be encountered inside Lush Caves, the semi-rare biomes that generate underground beneath Azalea Trees. These lovable mud puppies will generally appear in watery areas if there are Clay blocks less than five blocks below their initial spawn point. Fortunately, Lush Caves are filled with Clay blocks and ponds, so there are plenty of RNG-based opportunities for an Axolotl to spawn. Once you have found one, you can collect it in a Bucket to take back to your base. 

How to feed Minecraft Axolotls

Axolotls in Minecraft eat Buckets of Tropical Fish. They will actively attack any Tropical Fish within the nearby vicinity, but they only eat Buckets of Tropical Fish from a player’s hand. If you attempt to let an Axolotl eat a regular raw Tropical Fish, your character will proceed to consume it instead.

What do Axolotls need to survive in Minecraft

If you are attempting to operate an Axolotl farm in Minecraft, the primary element that will enable your Axolotls to survive is water. Occasionally, these aquatic creatures will make their way onto dry land before returning back to their pond or lake. However, wild Axolotls will never stay out of the water longer than five minutes; otherwise, they will die. Your Axolotls do not need to constantly eat to survive in Minecraft, as feeding them Buckets of Tropical Fish is primarily used for breeding. Instead, make sure that they will never get stuck on any blocks or objects outside their water-filled living space that might prevent them from leaving dry land.

If you ever plan to use Sponges to clear out the water of specific areas in your base, ensure your Axolotls are not inside the same water reservoirs. Additionally, Axolotls in Minecraft will sometimes leave their home independently to attack another aquatic mob, like Drowners or Tropical Fish. Therefore, building a protective fence or blockade to have your mud puppies stay put might be a good idea to keep them out of potential harm’s way.
